Thiksey Monastery, often referred to as the "Mini Potala Palace of Ladakh," is a prominent Tibetan Buddhist monastery situated approximately 19 km east of Leh, the capital of Ladakh. Perched atop a hill, it offers panoramic views of the Indus Valley and the surrounding Himalayan ranges. The monastery is renowned for its architectural grandeur, spiritual ambiance, and cultural significance.
Thiksey Monastery is one of Ladakh's most iconic Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, located just 19 km from Leh. Often called the “Mini Potala Palace” due to its striking resemblance to Lhasa’s Potala, it sits majestically on a hilltop, offering stunning views of the Indus Valley and surrounding mountains. Visitors can explore its 12-story complex, which includes the impressive 15-meter Maitreya Buddha statue, Tara Temple, and Lamokhang Temple that holds sacred scriptures. The rooftop is a favorite spot for sunrise and sunset views.
Gustor Festival (October-November): A two-day celebration featuring Cham dances, ritual prayers, and the revelation of deity faces, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
Yuru Kabgyat (June-July): Commemorates the victory of good over evil with masked dances and traditional rituals.
