Alchi Monastery is a revered Tibetan Buddhist site in Ladakh, India, renowned for its ancient murals and serene ambiance. Located approximately 65 km from Leh, the monastery is accessible via the Srinagar-Leh highway. Visitors can reach it by taxi, private vehicle, or rented motorcycle, with the journey offering scenic views of the Indus River and nearby villages.

Established in the 10th century by Rinchen Zangpo, Alchi Monastery is one of the few surviving monasteries from that era. Unlike other Ladakhi monasteries built on hilltops, Alchi is situated on flat ground, showcasing unique architectural styles influenced by Kashmiri artists. ​

The monastery houses some of the oldest surviving paintings in Ladakh, created using natural pigments like lapis lazuli and malachite. These murals depict scenes from Buddhist mythology and daily life during the 10th century. ​

Alchi hosts several Buddhist festivals between May and September, including Chotrul Duchen, Galdan Namchot, and Losar (Tibetan New Year). These festivals feature traditional dances, music, and cultural performances, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of Ladakhi heritage. ​
